What is WebMarshal? |
WebMarshal is a software product known as a "web proxy" which is used for management, control and compliance of your company's Web browsing.
It allows your organisation to provide safe, controlled
access to the Internet.
When a user on your network requests access to a web page, the request goes through WebMarshal. WebMarshal then checks the requested web page against a set of rules that you define (your internet access policy). WebMarshal then scans the page for its content - viruses, profanity, appropriateness, bomb making, adult themes, time wasting etc - a whole host of things..
Then if the rules allow, and the user is allowed access, and if WebMarshal deems the page is "safe", WebMarshal fetches the page and sends it to the users browser.
It does all this instantly and transparently to your users - affording them a safe Internet browsing experience.
WebMarshal is unique in being completely customisable. It is so much more than a traditional blacklist such as Websense or Surfcontrol that it is difficult to compare. Using WebMarshal you decide how open or closed you wish web browsing to be. |

Can WebMarshal stop phishing attacks and deny access to "fake" websites? |
Yes it can using a variety of techniques. As well as looking for "known" phishing sites, WebMarshal can also scan the content of a page using "Text Censor Scripts" which will be able to identify known phishing scams. It can also block known phishing websites. Additional anti-phishing technology is being incorporated into the product all the time.
To stop the initial phishing email, we recommend using MailMarshal - the very best email content security tool available today. |
Can WebMarshal allow lunch time surfing? |
Yes it can. An extremely versatile rule set allows you to create a policy which will grant access to permitted websites for a particular group of users between certain times of the day. |
Using WebMarshal can I limit how much people actually surf? |
Absolutely. By assigning quota limits you can cap either how much time is spent online or you can limit how much bandwidth is consumed, or even both! As part of the same flexible rule options you can integrate quota usage seamlessly. |
Can WebMarshal categorise websites it has analysed / people have visited before? |
Yes, by adding websites to various categories either during a blocking or non-blocking scenario, you can make other rules more "intelligent." WebMarshal is a learning application, so becomes more effective at enforcing your Acceptable Use Policy the more it is used. |
Does WebMarshal come with an out-of the box configuration that I can use straight away?
Yes. Although very minor adjustments will be needed to switch certain rules on and off, you can start filtering and reporting on what people can do online within a few minutes of installation. |
Can WebMarshal start blocking things like pornography straight away? |
Of course! |
I don't want to start blocking people just yet. Can WebMarshal monitor what is happening without any restrictions? |
Yes it can. By using rules that monitor for different types of request and writing out classifications to the database, you can run all sorts of reports to get an idea of what is going on at your gateway. |
I don't want to use clever filtering techniques, I'd rather have a simple WhiteList and BlackList of websites for different groups. Can WebMarshal do this?
Yes it can. By using a very simple set of rules you can limit exactly which websites are allowed or not, either by implementing a "WhiteList" of only-allowed websites, or by creating a "BlackList" of only-non allowed websites. Different groups of course may be subject to either type of list. |
I want my users to know that they are being monitored, but I don't want to be a internet-nazi! Can I allow my users to continue to look at non-authorised websites rather than fully blocking them? |
Yes. Instead of showing a "Blocked" page you have the option to display a warning page instead with a "Grant Temporary Access" button. Your users can then continue surfing without hindrance, but will be made aware that they may be about to look at inappropriate content. |
Can I create my own types of filter rather than just adding websites to a blacklist?
Yes you can. Text Censor Scripts (TCS) are easy to create a maintain. Simply employ rules to use a TCS you have created, and WebMarshal will begin to scan web content including your filters. |
Can I import User Groups from Active Directory? |
Yes you can. WebMarshal is fully Active Directory aware. |
Can WebMarshal be used as an upstream proxy, or pass requests to another upstream proxy? |
Yes it can. WebMarshal also works with MS ISA in chained or plugin configuration. |
Can WebMarshal block certain file types?
WebMarshal can identify files by it's file structure, not just the file extension. The simple-to-use GUI lets you pick and choose file types that you wish to filter out. |
I have 10,000 users in my organisation. Can WebMarshal scale up to meet the demand of many thousands of people online? |
Yes. WebMarshal can either run from a single machine servicing everyone, or you can have WebMarshal in an "array" of multiple servers node / master array, all sharing a single configuration and reporting to one MSDE/SQL database - which in itself can be replicated for further fault tolerance. |

Due to speed and performance issues, WebMarshal only supports scanners with NetIQ approved DLL based interfaces such as Sophos, McAfee and Norman. |
Does WebMarshal check file uploads? |

WebMarshal provides automatic, customised generation of blacklists and whitelist's through our Text Censor lexical analysis technology - so generally additional blacklists are not required.
However, if it is required, WebMarshal (as an optional extra) also uses the SmartFilter Categorised Blacklist from Secure Computing (formerly Sentian), and also Marshal Filter.
What are Whitelists? |
Whitelist's are lists of web sites approved for users to access. WebMarshal allows creation of multiple Whitelist's so that Web access can be controlled by department or organizational function. |
